A symphony of responsiveness

Responsive design is more than shrinking a layout. We look at how type, images and spacing should adapt from phone to wide screen.

A responsive website isn't a desktop layout squeezed onto a phone. It's one composition that rearranges itself, like an orchestra playing the same piece in a small room or a concert hall.

Type that scales with intent

Big display headlines are what make a desktop layout feel bold, but at the same size they swallow a phone screen. Set clear steps for each breakpoint so headings stay dramatic without pushing the content out of view.

Images that keep their focus

A wide hero photo cropped to a tall phone screen can easily lose the person it was about. Set a focal point for every image so the crop follows the subject, and serve smaller files to smaller screens.

Space as rhythm

Generous white space feels luxurious on a large monitor and wasteful on a phone. Scale the gaps between sections with the screen, but keep the proportions the same, and the page will feel like one design everywhere.
